Nonprofit Organizations, Government, and the Welfare State
Michael Lipsky and Steven Rathgeb Smith examine the growing use of nonprofit service organizations to deliver public services. They show that despite rhetoric to the contrary that stresses the value of voluntarism, these nonprofit organizations are heavily dependent on government funding and have little independent financial capacity to service broad populations.
