The Environmental Mandate: Activists and the Electorate
Laura M. Lake analyzes the environmental mandate of the 1970s and argues that the recent stalemate over renewing environmental laws is due to a misperception of the nature of public support. She finds that the environmental mandate is broad and long-lived and that the environmentalist electorate contrasts sharply with the stereotype of the environmental movement.
