Rethinking Warfare in the 21st Century: The Influence and Effects of the Politics, Information and Communication Mix, Iulian Chifu and Greg Simons

In this book, Iulian Chifu and Greg Simons review and evaluate how academics, mass media outlets, and political actors conceptualize warfare in the twenty-first century. The authors argue that this conceptualization is essential to better understand global geopolitical transformations that take place from the unipolar to a multipolar global order. As the book's title suggests, this book covers a lot of ground, representing a mix of conceptual, theoretical, and empirical perspectives on this topic. Ten thematic chapters, not including the introduction and conclusion chapters, investigate the following three questions:

- Is warfare in the twenty-first century fundamentally different from that of previous eras?

- In what ways do politics and information shape and impact warfare in the twenty-first century?

- What potential trends and changes might we see in twenty-first-century warfare going forward?

The authors begin by exploring fundamental concepts of information warfare, including the politicization and relativization of “truth” aimed at influencing audiences, as discussed in Chapter 2. Chapter 3 examines both tangible and intangible elements of modern warfare, noting how intangible factors can affect the efficacy of tangible components.
